OUR MATERIALS

Take a closer look at at the natural materials and traditional craftsmanship that go into every Odd mattress and bed base. From pocket springs to Yorkshire wool, this page reveals exactly what we use and why we build every bed the way we do.

Inside a Mattress

Made Properly, From the Inside Out

Every Odd mattress, bed base and headboard begins the same way: with real materials, real craftsmanship and real people in our Yorkshire workshop. Everything is made to order using natural fillings, pocket springs, solid timber and carefully chosen fabrics — each selected with purpose, whether that’s breathability, longevity or supporting UK makers. No shortcuts. No foam. No mass production. Just honest, handcrafted comfort built to last and designed around you.

What’s inside our mattresses

Every Odd mattress is built the traditional way: two-sided, fully turnable and handcrafted for long-lasting comfort. This approach isn’t fast, but it’s the right way to make a pocket sprung mattress that performs year after year.

At the centre of each mattress sits a core of individually wrapped, full-height pocket springs. These springs move independently to support your body, reduce partner disturbance and keep air circulating through the mattress. No microsprings, no glued foam layers.

Surrounding the springs are our natural mattress fillings, each one hand-layered on both sides to create balanced comfort and consistent performance. We then hand-tuft every mattress for stability, hand side-stitch the borders for long-term edge support, and finish each piece with meticulous care in our Yorkshire workshop. It’s a process perfected by our makers, the Odd Squad, and it’s why our handmade mattresses stay comfortable for years, not seasons.

The Natural Fillings we use

Cotton
Soft, breathable and brilliantly absorbent. Cotton is the foundation for many of our mattresses, helping regulate temperature and wick away moisture for year-round comfort.

Lambswool
A naturally springy layer that insulates without ever overheating. Warm in winter, cool in summer, and wonderfully resilient — lambswool adds depth and softness to our premium builds.

Horsehair
A favourite of master bed-makers for generations. Each hollow strand acts as a natural micro-spring, creating unmatched breathability and helping the mattress bounce back night after night. You’ll find it in our highest-spec mattresses.

Cashmere & Silk
In our most sumptuous mattresses, these fibres add luxurious softness while remaining breathable and moisture-regulating. A quiet hint of five-star comfort for home.

Why do natural materials matter?

Natural materials simply behave better while you sleep. They breathe, helping heat and moisture move away from your body so you stay comfortable in every season. They age gracefully, settling to your shape without ever feeling clammy or synthetic. Paired with pocket springs, they allow air to circulate through the mattress rather than trapping it, creating a calmer, cooler night’s rest. And because they’re made from fibres, not foams, they’re kinder on longevity too, giving you a mattress that lasts years rather than seasons.

What we use to build our bed bases

A good mattress deserves a good base and ours are built with the same attention to craft. Each base is upholstered by hand in your chosen fabric, with careful tensioning to avoid ripples and ensure a long-lasting, tailored finish.

FSC-Certified Timber
Every divan, ottoman and shallow base begins with a solid FSC-certified timber frame. Strong, stable and built so your mattress can perform at its best for years.

Our ottomans are fitted with high-quality gas pistons selected for the weight and size of your mattress. Drawer divans use durable runners and reinforced joints so they glide smoothly and stay square over time.

Our Upholstery Fabrics

We choose fabrics the same way we choose fillings: by looking at what they’re made from, how they’re made, and how far they have to travel. Every cloth in our house range has been selected because it supports lower-impact production, responsible mills, and long-lasting use.

The fabrics we stock:

Our wools include Linwood wool, woven in Yorkshire, which drastically reduces transport miles and supports local manufacturing right on our doorstep. Wool itself is renewable, naturally fire-resistant (reducing the need for chemical treatments), and fully biodegradable at the end of its long working life. Choosing British-made wool fabrics means a shorter, cleaner supply chain and a direct investment in UK textile skills.
