Given the significant health impacts of good-quality sleep, as well as the fact that over 29,000 sleeping hours will be spent lying upon it, ensuring your mattress is of a high quality is of the utmost importance.

As visual differences between mattresses are often small, at the Odd Mattress Company we often get asked ‘How do I know if a mattress is of good quality?’ Mattresses of course vary quite considerably in price, which may act as some form of indication of the quality and workmanship. However, price alone cannot determine whether a mattress is truly of the quality that you need. In this article, we detail the top three things to look for when assessing the quality of the mattress you want to purchase.

1. Material

The first thing to consider is the material in which the mattress is upholstered. A luxury mattress will be upholstered in natural materials of the finest quality. Cotton is a popular natural material used in the upholstery of luxury mattresses. Soft yet durable, non-irritable and good at regulating our temperature, cotton exhibits qualities which aren’t found in synthetic fibres. It is these characteristics of cotton which make it a perfect material with which to cover a luxury mattress.

At The Odd Mattress Company, all of our luxury mattresses are upholstered in cotton, an indication of the quality of the products we craft. We never use synthetic fibres such as nylon or polyester to upholster our high-quality mattress, as these materials just aren’t conducive to quality sleep. How can you tell if a mattress is covered in cotton? Unfortunately to the untrained eye, it can be pretty difficult: so we would suggest checking the mattresses label.

2. Depth of filling

A quality mattress, perhaps unsurprisingly, will have a quality fillings. What we mean by this is not only the volume and depth of the filling, but also the type of materials used.

It is the fillings which give a mattress a deep, luxurious feel, and in order to create this sensation a high quantity of quality fillings must be used. A luxury mattress which has been correctly filled will be relatively heavy. Cheaper fillings such as foam are less dense than natural fibres used in luxury mattresses and therefore lighter. A good physical que therefore to determine a luxury mattress from something which has been mass produced is how much the two mattresses weigh, with a quality mattress always weighing more.

At The Odd Mattress Company, our mattresses are always filled perfectly with the highest-quality natural fillings including lambswool, cashmere and horsehair. The use of these biodegradable fillings, in conjunction with a cotton cover offers the sleeper the perfect blend of support and softness. Each of these materials has countless benefits including being hypoallergenic, moisture wicking and having fibres which repel, as opposed to hold, static charge.

3. The quality of workmanship

Perhaps the most important quality of all to look for in your bespoke luxury mattress is the quality of workmanship present in your mattress. A luxury mattress should always be handcrafted. This is because there are processes which go into the production of quality mattresses which just cannot be replicated to the same standard by a machine. Indeed, all of these skills take years to perfect: whether that be hand side-stitching, hand tufting, or tape edging – these techniques cannot be performed by anyone other than an expert.

Each mattress made by The Odd Mattress Company is handcrafted by skilled craftsmen, using techniques that have been perfected over centuries. The level of experience present amongst our mattress makers can be seen in the attention to detail and precision which goes into each and every one of the mattresses we make.

4. The Odd Mattress seal

Finally, the best way to ascertain the quality of the luxury mattress you buy is to look for our stamp! Every one of our mattresses bears the Odd Mattress name stitched onto the label: the true seal of quality for our clients.
