Bed Base
Almost all antique beds will require a bed base. Both our sprung bed base and firm top bed base are designed to support your handmade mattress correctly when used on an antique bed frame such as a Victorian iron and brass bed or four poster bed.
All our bed bases are constructed from FSC approved pine and ash, incorporate chamfered corners, and are upholstered in either a cream cotton or traditional striped Shaftesbury cotton ticking. We make our bases hinged to enable easy transport to the bedroom.

Firm Top Bed Base
We make our firm top bed bases with a perforated timber platform top beneath the upholstery, as opposed to a compressed cardboard used by most other manufacturers. Using a perforated timber top ensures the mattress is correctly supported while enabling air to circulate through the mattress, which allows the mattress to breath and is crucial for ensuring continued mattress hygiene.

Sprung Top Bed Base
We incorporate a spring system into the top of the bed base which compliments the spring system found within the mattress, extends mattress life, ensures air flow through the mattress, and creating a more luxurious feel.

MADE TO MEASURE
We can make made to measure bed bases to any length, width or depth. Our bed bases can also be made to a bespoke shape, which means we can make bed bases for continental antique beds such as Corbeille French beds with a curved foot end or for a four poster bed where the bed base includes cut out corners.

RECYCLING YOUR OLD BED BASE
We are delighted to be able to offer a removal and full recycling service of our customers old bed bases. Each base once collected will be separated into its component parts which are processed and returned to the circular economy. Our service guarantees your old bed bases are diverted from landfill and the materials recycled and given a second life in other manufacturing sectors.
Our bed base and mattress removal and recycling service can be requested when we contact you to organise delivery. We regrettably are unable to offer removal and recycling in remote delivery locations where a third party transport company may complete delivery on our behalf.

Bed Bases for Antique Beds
There can be a tendency to want to continue using an old bed base long after it has stopped providing adequate support for your mattress. Unfortunately nothing is designed to last forever and although your wooden or metal frame sprung base may be original, if it has started to sag or the top surface has become uneven, it should be replaced.
Antique beds rarely conform to todays modern standard sizing. Because of this, if you have an antique bed frame you will probably need a made to measure bed base designed to fit your beds bespoke sizing. Our bed bases can be made to any size, and there depth can be tailored to ensure that when paired with your mattress the correct aesthetic or ‘look’ is created, meaning the top of the mattress neither sits too low or high on the bed.
Bed Bases made to Any Size, Shape and Depth
As with our made to measure mattresses, we are able to manufacture our made to measure bed bases to any size, shape or depth. Our sprung bed base starts at a depth of 4” (10cm) deep whereas our firm top bed base can be made as shallow as 2” (6cm). There is no maximum limit in the depth of bed base we can make.
We can make our bespoke bed bases to any size and almost any shape, which means that no matter the dimensions, we can make a base which will fit your bed perfectly.

What about slatted bases?
We would consider the use of a slatted base beneath a mattress to be a compromise, which will often not provide the required support for the mattress and the springs contained within it. Please call our team for helpful guidance if you intend to use your new mattress on a slatted base.
The use of one of our mattresses on a slatted base, which is unable to fully support the mattress, will invalidate your warranty.
Should you replace your old divan base when buying a new mattress?
We would strongly recommend that you consider replacing any base when you purchase a new mattress as they are designed to complement each other in terms of structure and support. The use of a new mattress upon an old or distorted base could substantially reduce the life of your new mattress, compromise comfort levels and will invalidate your warranty.
