Tackling chronic insomnia is a huge problem for many people as struggling to sleep can affect your work as well as your home life. Having very little sleep will not only have a negative impact on your health but could also contribute to underlying problems such as heart disease, depression or asthma.

According to the Mirror.co.uk, the Royal Pharmaceutical Society has found that many people suffering with insomnia are buying sleep remedies over the counter, before getting any medical advice from an expert.

The Great British Sleep survey, questioning 20,000 adults in the UK, also discovered that nearly half of the people surveyed take sleeping pills, but have seen no improvement in their sleeping patterns over the years.

Here are some of the reasons why you may not be sleeping well:

Depression

If you are always waking up early, your mood and energy is low and you have completely lost your appetite you may be suffering from depression. Perhaps you have been feeling particularly stressed or anxious? If this is the case, it is likely that your mood will affect your overall night’s sleep as both are intrinsically linked.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is said to be one of the most effective methods used to treat the illness and it is most commonly prescribed for depression, to help you develop a healthier relationship with sleep.

Asthma

Asthma is another condition that could be causing you to have many sleepless nights as it is an irritating cough that comes and goes. This condition stops sleep as it irritates the airways, especially when you are lying down. It is also likely that you are worst affected by asthma in the bedroom as there are many allergens from the bedding which may trigger any allergy problems.

The Odd Mattress Company has a wide range of bed bases and mattresses that will help your insomnia by giving you the chance to have a comfortable and calming night’s sleep.
