Four Bad Sleeping Habits You Should Kick for a Better Rest
A good night’s sleep is an essential part to a successful day.
Not getting enough sleep will not only make you feel groggy and irritable in the morning, but it will make concentrating and functioning much more difficult. Therefore, when you are finding it hard to settle down and get some shut-eye at night, it is both inconvenient and frustrating.
There are many bad sleeping habits which can take their toll on your rest.
To help you try to cut down on activities that are harmful to your bedtime, we have put together a list of habits to avoid at night.
Read on to find out what to avoid doing, so you have more chance of getting your full eight hours’ worth of sleep.
Irregular Sleeping Hours
Sleeping at irregular hours will make it extremely hard for you to develop a sleeping pattern.
If you regularly switch up what time you go to bed, such as choosing to sleep at 9pm one night and 3am the next, it is nearly impossible to establish a sleep routine.
This means that your body will find it difficult to know when to start preparing for bedtime, and make it much more difficult to relax when you finally want to get to sleep.
Therefore, to make it easier to drift to sleep at the end of the day, try setting up a regular bedtime and sticking to it. This will allow your body and mind to adjust to sleeping at a certain time and mean that you won’t struggle as much to fall asleep.
Eating or drinking in bed

Aside from the obvious fact that eating or drinking in bed will create crumbs, causing a messy and uncomfortable sleeping area, it will also mean that you begin to associate your sleeping area with other activities.
Once your brain begins to connect your bed with a place to eat rather than sleep, it will make settling down at night much more difficult.
Along with this, certain foods can keep you awake at night. Therefore, be sure that the foods that you eat before bed won’t wake you up when you don’t want them to.
Mattress Quality
Sleeping on a worn-out, bad quality mattress can cause major discomfort, and sometimes even illnesses from bacteria build up.
This can make it even more difficult to achieve a good night’s rest, however, it is easily preventable.
A new mattress will help you avoid any nasty illnesses and allow you to sleep uninterrupted, in turn meaning that you wake up feeling refreshed.

Caffeine and nicotine

While you are probably aware that a coffee before bed is not the best idea, it might be less obvious that foods like chocolate also contain caffeine, which will certainly keep you up at night.
It may also be useful to know that nicotine is a stimulant and therefore cigarettes or other products that contain nicotine should also be avoided for a few hours before bed.
