Differences Between Mattress Types
Choosing the ideal mattress for you isn’t an easy task, especially when your posture and quality of sleep is so hugely impacted on the choice you make.
There are many different types of mattress that you can choose from; the perfect fit for you depends on what kind of firmness you like and/or are used to.
A comfortable mattress is essential for a great sleep, so knowing the difference between different mattress types is the best way to find the perfect one for you.
Here is the difference between some of the most popular mattress types:
Coil mattresses
Coil mattresses were invented in the late 19th century and are made in a continuous system of steel coil springs. A variety of coils are used to create a coil mattress; the more springs, the bouncier the mattress is.
Because these kinds of mattress are very bouncy, they are great for absorbing shock. This prevents the chance of a quick tear, which is why they are popular choices for children’s beds.
Coil mattresses are also less expensive than other mattress types, but in turn can be less comfortable over longer periods of time.
Latex mattresses
Latex mattresses can be made from either natural or synthetic rubber and provide a good amount of comfort and support whilst sleeping.
These kinds of mattress are often firmer than coil mattresses, making them a great choice for people who prefer a firm sleeping area.
Although latex mattresses are great for allergy-suffers thanks to them being hypo-allergenic and dust-mite resistant, their firm qualities make them less popular than typical coil mattresses.
Latex mattresses probably wouldn’t be the mattress of choice for people who prefer a softer base but they’re an excellent choice for trying to get a sound nights sleep!
Memory foam mattresses
Memory foam mattresses have become increasingly popular over the past few years and are characterised by an open cell structure. This is what helps to give the mattress its unique ability to slowly spring back when pressure has been applied to it.
These kinds of mattresses are temperature sensitive so soften and mould to the body with heat. However this can result in overheating, especially during hot summer nights.
Memory foam mattresses can also be susceptible to emitting unpleasant smells when they get too hot, and so a good mattress protector is always recommended.
Pocket sprung mattresses
One of the most popular mattress types is a pocket sprung mattress.
These mattresses are so popular amongst sleep lovers as they provide maximum support for the contours of your body, helping you to feel as comfortable as possible whilst you sleep.
Pocket sprung mattresses can come in a range of types depending on the amount of springs included. For king-size beds this can range from 600 to as much as 2000 springs per layer.
The perfect number for your own personal mattress depends on a number of things, including your weight and the firmness you desire.
These springs are sewn into individual fabric pockets within the mattress. The higher the spring count, the more comfortable the mattress is, and in turn the better night’s sleep you get.
