LUXURIOUS HANDMADE MATTRESS PROTECTORS
We recommend using a mattress protector with all of our mattresses, to aid bed hygiene and prolong mattress life. We make two types of fitted mattress protector, a thick unquilted cotton protector made using a half panama weave which is soft and hard wearing, and a quilted, percale weave, cotton protector for the ultimate in bedroom luxury.

The Truth About Thread Count
Like spring count in mattresses, when it comes to thread count in bedding, more is not always better. No doubt you’ve seen sheets elsewhere listed with thread counts in the high hundreds or even thousands. Although marketed as such, these additional ‘threads’ provide no additional luxury or comfort and are merely designed to grab your attention and result in a sale. Here’s why…
Thread Count
Thread count should mean the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric. More technically this is the number of horizontally woven (weft) and vertically woven (warp) threads which go into making one square inch of your bed sheet.
But What Constitutes a Thread?
This is where creative counting techniques start being used. A thread is made up of cotton fibres or yarns, which are twisted, otherwise known as plyed, together to create the thread. Some thread is made up of a single yarn, while other threads are comprised of two or more yarns twisted together. When yarns are twisted the thread created is called double, triple or quadruple ply thread or simply “multi ply thread”. It is by counting the number of plys, for example, three, that go into making the thread, as opposed to the thread itself, which allows what is a 200 thread sheet to be marketed as a 600 thread sheet.
All our thread counts use the number of single ply threads that are weft and warped in a square inch of cloth.
So Does Thread Count Matter?
Anything beyond 400 thread is likely to be calculated by counting the number of plys, and therefore thread counts above this figure should be discounted. If a sheet genuinely does have a thread count above 400 the cloth will be so tightly woven it won’t breath easily and therefore isn’t in our opinion suitable for use in bedding. What is more important once you reach 400 thread is the type of weave used. All our sheets are a percale as opposed to sateen weave, which gives our sheets that crisp feeling when it is laid upon. Unlike sateen, percale weave also does not succumb to pilling – those funny little bobbles that build up on the surface of the sheet.
